Health Effects of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Been taking notice of all of the talk about indoor air quality as of late? If so, you probably also see all of the products, services, and tips for how to deal with it. But there’s a problem our team has been noticing about all of this business. Folks are really quick to tell you that you need to solve the problem. But they aren’t as quick to tell you why.

At BVS Air Conditioning & Heating, we feel like it’s a bit off putting to just try to tell people to do things, and not really give a reason. And in some of the cases we’ve seen, it’s been downright misleading! Well, today we’re here to have a talk about the whole air quality thing. Let’s talk about what it is, why it’s a problem, and what you can do to get it fixed most effectively.

What Is “Poor” Air Quality?

The biggest thing to know here is that the air in your home is, in many ways, no different from the air outside. All of the dust, the debris, pollen, pollutants, mold spore, and more are all there. And the big problem about it is that it tends to be many times more concentrated. Why? Mostly because the air comes in, through windows, doors, HVAC intake and ducts, and other sources, and then it doesn’t really go anywhere. It gets consistently cycled, in fact, by your fans and HVAC system. The result is a growing horde of junk that permeates your air, and eventually your respiratory system.

How Poor Air Quality Impacts Your Health

The problems here can be pretty diverse depending on the person in question and just how bad the air quality in your home is. If you have pets, that’s a mark against your air quality. Indoor smoking, of course, is another big one. And areas like here in Houston are prone to high concentrations of pollen and dust, which are also big factors.

And then there’s your home itself and the number of occupants you have. Bottom line, if you don’t have an air quality system in your home, the odds are pretty high that you have an air quality issue of some kind.

So what can this do to you? Well, here are some of the biggest concerns:

  • Exacerbated allergy symptoms
  • Frequent headaches
  • Manifestations of respiratory illness
  • Feelings of lethargy and tiredness
  • Congestion and sneezing
  • Dizziness

Feeling tired, headachy, or just a bit off? If so, the problem could very well be poor air quality! Though honestly speaking, if you’re having these symptoms, or any combination of the ones listed above, go see a health care professional. Seriously, we’ll talk more about air quality later. Health comes first!
