How to Prepare Your HVAC for the Winter

Winter is approaching quickly and as the temperature drops, your heater will be a lifeline from the cold. As you scurry inside, you rely on the heat to quickly warm you up. Here are some tips to prepare your heating system for colder weather.

Change your air filter.

Dirty air filters are one of the most common causes of malfunctions in HVAC units. Especially when the season changes, this is a sign that you would need to change out your air filter and prevent a malfunction in your system from occurring. By changing your air filter not only will it keep your HVAC system healthy, but it will keep costs down and air quality up!

Turn on your furnace a few times before winter.

While the weather is still mild outside, make sure that you turn on your furnace a few times. If you wait till it is a really cold day, you don’t want to try and turn on your furnace for the first and it does not work. If you find that your furnace is not working properly, be sure to schedule an appointment with a trained technician and get your system ready for the winter.

Make sure all your vents are open and clear.

Unknowingly, you may have closed or blocked a vent, which stops airflow through your house. Although you may be trying to save money by closing a vent in an unused room, that may not be the best idea. Closed air vents reduce airflow into your home, which then can cause leaks in your air ducts. This can then lead to excess moisture and mold, and in bad cases, crack your system’s heat exchanger leading to carbon monoxide leaking into your home.
Keep everyone safe by allowing airflow throughout your whole home!

Perform regular maintenance.

Even if it seems like all is well with your HVAC system, it is important to have a professional make sure everything is working properly behind the scenes. You don’t want to end up with an unwanted breakdown with no knowledge of how it happened or be spending extra money with the holidays already cutting into your budget when it could be easily preventable.
During warmer seasons, dust, dirt, and debris can collect on (and inside) your furnace. This can cause your furnace’s burners to function incorrectly. Call a professional today to have a technician clean out your furnace so that it is ready for use. It is not recommended you try and perform maintenance or clean your furnace on your own, as it can void your warranty if not done properly. Be sure to schedule today to make sure you are prepared for the weather to come!

By following the steps listed above, you will be ready for colder weather in no time. Want some more tips on how to make sure you are prepared for the Winter? Simply call today and we can help with the answers you need.
