Imagine it’s summer here in Texas (which it almost is). You get home from work. You change your clothes. You head into the kitchen to get a big glass of iced tea and then you stop. You look up at your air vent. Is that warm air blowing on you? If it is, your air conditioning unit may be acting up.
Don’t Ignore the problem.

Don’t keep running your AC.
The first thing to do is (even though it’s the last thing you want to do) turn off your AC unit. If a component is loose, or your condenser isn’t working properly, running the unit can cause more damage. An electrical issue may also be the culprit and could be dangerous if your air conditioner is still running.
To keep cool after your turn of the AC, turn on some fans to create air flow. After the sun goes down, open the window and place a cool sheet in front of it. Place a cool cloth on your forehead. Take a cold shower.
Don’t’ try to fix it on your own.
Unless you are changing the air filter, you should leave repairs to an air conditioner expert. Don’t use duct tape the put something loose back together. Don’t add refrigerant. A professional needs to check levels and look for leaks.
Don’t open fridge or freezer.
Opening the freezer door will not cool off the room. It will cause a lot of strain on the appliances to do their jobs. Don’t use any appliances that add heat (stove, oven, washer, dryer, dishwasher, toaster).
Don’t open your windows.
You’ll let in more heat. Instead, make sure all your windows are closed tight. Close all you blinds and drapes to keep the sun out during the day.
Don’t stay home.
If it’s uncomfortably hot in your house, then it’s time to leave. Go to a friend’s house. Go to the movies, the mall or the library. Taking yourself out of the hot environment will make you feel much better.
