When Do I Need To Replace My Home’s Wiring?

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are more than 45.000 residential electrical fires across the nation each year—nearly half of which are related to home electrical wiring. There are a number of situations which warrant an inspection from a certified professional, including:

  • Home addition
  • Major home renovation
  • Home is over 40 years of age
  • Recent addition of major appliances or upgrades
  • Presence of ungrounded, dual-prong outlets

Contact BVS for electrical repair if you notice any of the following:

  • Hot, scorched, or discolored outlets
  • A burning smell
  • Visibly frayed wires
  • Loose switches or outlets
  • Buzzing, sizzling, cracking, or popping from your electrical system
  • Sparks or arcs when you plug or unplug cords
  • Repeated tripping of circuit breakers
  • Flickering lights, or lights that dim when other items are in use
  • Rodent invasion

In homes greater than 40 years old, outdated wiring was not designed to handle the demands of modern day electronics. If you’re uncertain of the condition of your wiring, one of our licensed electricians can perform an inspection and determine if electrical replacement is needed.

Types of Wiring

While single-conductor wires are commonly found in older homes, newer builds typically use multiconductor cables due to convenience. Either type may have metal or plastic sheathing, but while single-conductor wire contains either a solid or stranded wire, multiconductor cables contain any combination of one or more hot wires, a grounding wire, and a neutral wire.

Aluminum Vs. Copper Wire

Many homes built or remodeled between 1950 and 1980 were outfitted with aluminum wiring, due to the high price of copper at that time. While copper continues to cost more than aluminum, it has become the number one choice for home re-wiring for a number of  reasons:

  • Aluminum’s high rate of thermal expansion can result in loose connections, leading to sparking and the possibility of fire.
  • Aluminum is much softer than copper and easily nicked, which can cause hot spots and overheating.
  • Aluminum tends to corrode or oxidize, increasing resistance which can cause overheating.

The safest long term solution for electrical replacement is to use copper wiring in place of aluminum. Aside from cost, the advantages of copper wire include:

  • Copper is an efficient conductor, and has a low rate of thermal expansion that makes it incredibly stable.
  • Highly resistant to heat, eliminating the risk of overheating.
  • High tensile strength makes copper durable, versatile, and low maintenance.
